Bamber Bridge had calico printing by 1764, the first anywhere in Lancashire, and the cotton mills that followed left the village most of its older housing. Handloom weavers' cottages still stand on Church Road and spinners' cottages at Spinners Square, with red-brick terraces running back from Station Road, which carried the A6 until a bypass took the traffic in the 1980s. Later semis and modern estates fill in around them.
