Fulwood governed itself separately from Preston until 1974 and still reads as its own place: a conservation area following Garstang Road and Watling Street Road, mid-Victorian villas built by the town's industrialists, the barracks of 1848, and the Royal Preston Hospital on Sharoe Green Lane.

Where those large period houses have been divided into flats, offices or consulting rooms, they tend to carry more than one board, alterations from different decades and a clear case for periodic inspection. Around Cadley and Black Bull Lane the stock is mostly inter-war semi-detached, where it is common to find a part-rewire from the 1970s or 80s, a board that predates RCD protection, and kitchens and bathrooms extended since.
