By 1929 Bolton had 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works, and the housing built for the people who worked in them still shapes the town. Terraced streets run through Halliwell, Daubhill and the older parts of Great Lever, much of it late-Victorian red brick. The wiring in those houses is rarely original, but installations untouched since the 1950s or 60s still turn up rubber-sheathed cable, a rewireable fuse board and no main bonding at the incoming gas and water.
